What is Storage in Agriculture?

Storage of agricultural produce involves holding and preserving goods from the time they are produced until they are needed for consumption (future use).

Agricultural produce is stored in storage structures, until they are sold, consumed or used, for the next season’s farming operations. They include Silos, Cribs, Rhombus, Storage Barns, etc.

We will discuss storage structures in further detail in JSS2.

Purpose of Storage in Agricultural Produce:

a. To make sure that food is available.

b. To cut down on crop losses.

c. To save seeds for next planting season.

Factors Affecting Storage:

a. Moisture content.

b. Relative humidity.

c. Temperature.
