  • The Five Different Information Ages
    • tools associated with each age

As discussed in the previous topic, the Five Different Information Ages are;

  • The Stone Age.
  • The Iron Age.
  • The Middle Ages.
  • The Industrial Age.
  • The Electronic Age.

1. The Stone Age:

The Stone Age witnessed the prehistoric period, during which stone was widely used to make implements with a sharp edge, a point, or a percussion surface. Humans created tools from stone for lack of better technology.

Stones were carved and shaped on the walls and other places for different purposes, one of which was to provide information. For example, flint was shaped for use as a cutting tool and weapon, whereas clay was used to make pottery. The period lasted for roughly 3.4 million years, and ended between 4,000 BCE and 2,000 BCE, before the arrival of metalworking.

2. Iron Age:

This is the period when iron was developed as the major tool for man. The Iron Age was a period in human history that started between 1200 B.C. and 600 B.C., depending on the region, and followed the Stone Age and Bronze Age.

As humans, life’s gradual attention began to shift from stone to iron. Iron, such as steel and bronze, was used for making tools and weapons for war, for example, hoes, knives, and cutlasses were made for agriculture and for wars.

This period witnessed many changes in society including different agricultural practices, religious beliefs, and artistic styles. It lasted between the end of Bronze age and the spread of Roman Empire

3. The Middle Ages:

This age experienced major technological advances, which include the manufacturing of gunpowder, mechanical clocks, measuring instruments like the barometer and thermometer, building techniques, and the gearing system. Horses were also used more efficiently during this period.

Feather or quill pens were important writing tools in this age. (used by craftsmen and artists to create beautiful calligraphy and manuscripts.) The process of writing was done by dipping the feather pen into an inkpot. There were also other inventions like wheelbarrows and four-wheeled wagons.

4. The Industrial Age:

The industrial age is known as the industrial revolution age. There were rapid, revolutionary changes, in the agriculture, transportation, manufacturing, and mining sectors across the globe in this era. Machines were produced and used to perform the tedious and manual production of goods. This era was a turning point because roads, ships, railways, electricity, etc. were developed.

Examples of Industrial Age tools are locomotive trains and sewing machines. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine, played central roles in the Industrial Revolution which also saw improved systems of transportation, communication, and banking. This period replaced an economy, based on manual labour, with one dominated by industry and machine manufacture.

5. The Electronic Age:

Call it the Information Age, the Computer Age, Digital Age, or the New Media Age. They are one and the same thing. It is a period in human history characterized by the shift from traditional industry to an economy based on information computerization. Just as the Industrial Revolution marked the onset of the Industrial Age, Information Age is associated with the Digital Revolution.

We are presently in an electronic age where electronic equipment is used including televisions, radio, video cameras, and computers. This covers the period from the advent of the personal computer to the development of the Internet. The computer is now acknowledged as the most important part of human existence. It is one of the tools needed for success and progress today. The device is essential for storing, retrieving, and manipulating vast amounts of information. In this period, silicon technology was fully harnessed together for human and societal advantages.
