What are Mechanical Counting and Calculating Devices?

Mechanical counting devices are manually operated simple machines or tools for counting and calculating numbers. They are simple equipment that can be operated manually by individuals.

The need for faster, more accurate, and reliable data, led to the development of mechanical counting and calculating devices. Yes, they were simple but yet, more advanced than early counting devices.

Mechanical Counting and Calculating Devices include:

  • Abacus.
  • John Napier’s bone.
  • Logarithm Tables.
  • Slide Rule.

Abacus:

This is the oldest known mechanical aid for calculating and has been in existence for 3000 years. It was invented by the Chinese in the 13th Century.
