Farm animals have basic characteristics that enable them to adapt to their natural environment. In this topic, we will be discussing the characteristics of farm animals including cattle, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits and pigs.

a. Cattle:

The following are characteristics of Cattle;

1. Cattle feed on herbage and pasture.

2. They possess a large body size.

3. Male and female animals have horns.

4. Mature female cattle are referred to as cows and mature male cattle are referred to as bulls. A baby cow is called a calf. A group of cows is called a herd of cattle.

  • Bull – intact adult male.
  • Ox – castrated adult male.
  • Steer – castrated male.

5. They have four pairs of hoofs on each limb.

6. A cattle produces at least one calf in a year.

7. They are reared for milk, meat, and skin production.

8. Cow meat is called beef.

9. Dairy cattle are bony and docile.
