Advantages & Disadvantages of Friction

Advantages of Friction:

1. The friction between grinding stone and tools like a cutlass and knife allows for sharpening.

2. It helps to stop motion or stop objects in motion.

3. Used in watch repair.

4. Used for making brakes for cars and bicycles which helps to control their movements and prevents accidents.

5. A ladder positioned against a wall will not slide because of friction between the ladder and the wall.

6. With the help of friction it is possible to walk freely.

Disadvantages of Friction:

1. It causes wear and tear of components of the moving parts of machines.

2. It causes the wearing out of car tyres

3. It opposes motion.

4. It causes undesirable heat in machines.

5. It creates more work for moving machines.

6. It causes the heating of engines.

7. It reduces the efficiency of machines.
