Main Classes of Ceramics:

Ceramics can be classified into two groups, namely Natural Ceramics and Manufactured Ceramics;

  • Natural Ceramics: Natural ceramics are those that occur in nature, eg. silica, silicates, and clay minerals, which are composed essentially of silica, alumina or magnesia, or both.
  • Manufactured Ceramics: These are those processed with some other elements in the industries. These include silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, and all various types of oxides, nitrides, carbides, borides, etc.

Other Classes of Ceramics:

1. Refractory Ceramics: These are ceramics made from fired clay. They are used for oven lining.
