What is a Ledger?

A ledger is the main or principal book of accounts used for recording accounting transactions.  It is the most important book of accounts that are kept by all organizations. It is also the final destination of all transactions recorded in the journal.

It is also called the book of final entry because the transactions which are first entered in journal or subsidiary books are finally incorporated in the ledger.

In the ledger, transactions are recorded using the double-entry system.
