- Correct Spacing After Punctuation Marks
Punctuation marks are symbols used to to give meaning to, break up or end a sentence.
It indicates how a piece of written text should be read and, simultaneously, understood.
Correct Spacing After Punctuation Marks:
. | Full stop or Period | A full stop (.) is usually used at the end of a sentence or an abbreviation. No space before a fullstop. After a full stop, two spaces must be left before starting the next sentence. |
, | Comma | A comma is a punctuation mark that represents a short pause and is used to divide parts of a sentence. There should be nil space before a comma and one space after. |
: | Colon | A colon is used to give emphasis, connect sentences, introduce lists or text, and clarify headings. Two spaces are left after a colon. |
; | Semi colon | A semicolon is a punctuation mark that represents a more significant pause than a comma but less significant than a period. One space is left after a semi column. |
? | Question mark | It is used after a question. Two spaces are given after a question mark. |
! | Exclamation mark | An exclamation mark is a punctuation sign that is used to indicate strong emotions and feelings and show emphasis. One space is usually left after an exclamation mark. |
{} () | Parentheses/Brackets | These are used to enclose numbers, words, phrases, or information that is added to a sentence. One space is usually left after a bracket/parenthesis. |
– | Hyphen | This is used to join words or parts of words. Hyphens are not separated by spaces |
— | Dash | A dash is longer than a hyphen and is commonly used to indicate a range or a pause. A dash has a space on either side. |
(“ ”) | Double quotation marks | These marks show that a passage of text is copied word-for-word from another source. |
‘’ | Single quotation marks | Single quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes. Leave no space between the quotation marks and the text they surround. Don’t insert a space between the period and the closing quotation mark. |
