Consequences of Lack of Repentance | Example of Eli & his Sons ( 1 Samuel 3:18, 1 Samuel 4:10-21)

Eli, who was a Prophet in Israel, in charge of the house of God at Shiloh, had two sons, Hophni and Phinehas. His sons were his assistant priests but they did so many bad things in the eyes of God.

They slept with women who served in the House of God, and also, took the best portions of meat that were meant for sacrifice.

Consequences of Lack of Repentance Hophni and Phinehas

Eli warned his children but they did not change their behaviour. God then decided to punish them.

God sent messages through Samuel to Eli, warning him of the punishment he planned for them.

Eli replied to Samuel “It is the Lord; let Him do what seemeth Him good”.

The Israelites went into battle with the Philistines and they lost the battle. The Philistines captured the ark of the covenant, and Eli’s sons were killed because of their lack of repentance. On the same day Eli died, his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, died during childbirth after she heard the news.

To summarize, God punished them because they failed to repent from their sins.
