John the Baptist Calls for Repentance (Luke 3:1-14)

John the Baptist, the son of Zacharias, was a prophet of God. He was sent to prepare the way for the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He lived most of his life in the wilderness of Judea, and Jordan far away from the corruption and cruelty of the rulers and people of that time. In the wilderness, he preached about baptism and repentance for the remission of sin.

He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

He preached as it is written in the book of the words of Isiah the prophet, saying;

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness
Prepare the way of the Lord:
Make His paths straight.
Every valley shall be filed
And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God”.

(Luke 3:4-6)

He then told the multitude of people to do things in a manner that shows they have repented. He advised them not to believe as descendants of Abraham they were special but instead, they should be good to one another and turn away from being evil, violent and corrupt.

He told them they needed to share the things they had and be fair to each other. They were also to make sure they were not cruel or violent and they should be satisfied with what they had, even their salaries (that is, how much they earned).
