The Birth of Isaac (Genesis 21:1-8)

When Abraham was ninety-nine (99) years old, God appeared to him and made a covenant (agreement) with him.

Genesis-21-isaac-is-born
  • The agreement was extended to all the descendants of Abraham.
  • In agreement, God promised Abraham that his wife (Sarah), who was barren, would give birth to a baby boy.
  • Abraham believed God, and after 25 years of waiting his wife conceived, and bore him a son. He named him Isaac, meaning laughter.

6. Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”
7. And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Genesis 21:6-7
  • When Isaac was born, Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90.
  • God had also commanded Abraham to be circumcised, along with every male in his household, and to circumcise all future male children born to his household at eight days old (Genesis 17:10–13).
  • Exactly eight days later, Abraham demonstrated his obedience to God by circumcising Isaac.
