  • Eminent Nigerians Obtain Freedom for their People

Throughout the times worldwide, indigenous people (that is, people local to that area) have been put in a position where they needed to fight to obtain their freedom from colonisers. Europeans are one of the foreigners who colonised indigenous people. They did this to various countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Nigeria was colonised by Europeans. Some other African countries that were colonised by Europeans are Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, and many others. India, Vietnam, and Indonesia are some examples of countries colonised by Europeans in Asia. Whereas, Mexico, Cuba and many other South American countries had to fight to gain freedom from Spanish and Portuguese rulers. (Spain and Portugal are countries in Europe.)

All the countries that were dominated, oppressed and ruled by the Europeans were free initially. The colonisers oppressed and ruled over the indigenous people of that area because they wanted to take advantage of and gain ownership of the natural and human resources in that area (or country) for their own (that is, the colonisers own) monetary gain (profit).

Eminent Nigerians Who Helped Nigeria Gain Its Freedom:

In every country that was colonised, the indigenous people who helped their country gain its freedom are constantly recognised and celebrated, and Nigeria is no different.

In Nigeria, our first great leader was Herbert Macaulay. He fought to gain independence for Nigeria. The Late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Late Obafemi Awolowo and the Late Sardauna of Sokoto joined the fight and continued to be at the forefront of the struggle for Nigeria to gain its independence from British colonisers.

These great men and leaders fought until Nigeria was able to gain its independence on October 1st, 1960. The goal after a country has gained independence and achieved political freedom from its oppressors and colonisers is for the indigenous people of that country to be able to control their country’s future. The natural and human resources of that country are now able to be used for the monetary gain of the indigenous people of that country.
