The Call of Joshua (Joshua 1:1-18):

Joshua was commonly known as the son of Nun. He was also referred to as Yehoshua, which translates to “Yahweh is salvation”. Joshua was from the tribe of Ephraim.

Joshua was divinely chosen to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after Moses’ death. He was one of the judges of Israel who served as Moses’ assistant during the journey through the wilderness and later took over leadership.

Moses publicly commissioned Joshua in front of the Israelites, reinforcing Joshua’s role as the new leader.

Joshua was known for his bravery and faith in God. He led the Israelites across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land, conquering cities like Jericho and Ai along the way.

Joshua’s Leadership Style:

Joshua’s leadership was crucial in fulfilling God’s promise to give the Israelites freedom by leading them into the Promised Land. His unwavering obedience to God’s commands and his strong leadership were key to their success in conquering the land and establishing a new home.

Key aspects of his leadership include:

Divine Obedience: He consistently followed God’s instructions, even when they seemed difficult or unusual, demonstrating faith and trust in God’s guidance. This quality was crucial in leading the Israelites into the Promised Land.

Strong and Courageous: In the Book of Joshua, God repeatedly instructs Joshua to “be strong and courageous,” emphasising the importance of his leadership and trust in God’s guidance (Joshua 1:6-9).

Prayerfulness: Joshua was a prayerful leader who sought God’s guidance and intervention in times of need. A notable example is when he prayed for the sun to stand still during a battle to help the Israelites win. This prayer was answered, demonstrating God’s response to Joshua’s faith and boldness (Joshua 10:12).

Dedication: Joshua was dedicated to God and His law, making him a faithful leader of Israel. His dedication was demonstrated through his obedience to God’s instructions, his unwavering faith, and his courageous leadership.

Death of Joshua (Joshua 24):

When Joshua was about to die, he gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem and called for the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel. He encouraged them to serve God and throw away their false gods.

Joshua told them that as for him and his family, they would serve the Lord.

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Joshua 24:15

This was Joshua’s final encouragement to the people of Israel before his death. The people of Israel obeyed him and served the Lord. He died at the age of 110 years.
