  • The Definition of Freedom
  • Types of Freedom

What is Freedom?

Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants.

It can also be said that freedom is the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.
People can be enslaved or imprisoned unlawfully through oppression and violence by their own people or foreigners. God helped free and liberate people who were enslaved or illegally imprisoned.

Types of Freedom:

There are different types and forms of freedom associated with different parts of human existence. They are;

i. Freedom of Speech: This right allows individuals to express their opinions, beliefs, and ideas without fear of censorship or punishment.

ii.  Freedom of Religion: This right allows individuals to practice their own religion or belief system without interference.

iii. Economic Freedom: This refers to a person’s ability to work, buy and sell property, and economic activity without undue restrictions.

iv.  Political Freedom: This is the right to participate in the political process, including voting, running for office, and expressing opinions on political issues.

The Israelites in ancient Egypt were enslaved and therefore did not have the right to vote or participate in political processes. Moses’ leadership in the Exodus from Egypt is seen as a pivotal moment in the establishment of Israel’s political freedom. He led the Israelites out of slavery, challenging the authority of the Egyptian Pharaoh and ultimately liberating them from their bondage, paving the way for the Israelites to establish their own society and governance.

v. Social Freedom: This is the freedom to interact with others, join groups, and participate in social activities.

Other types of Freedom include Freedom from Oppression, Freedom from Fear, and Cultural Freedom.
