What is Word Processing?

Word processing is the preparation of documents such as letters, reports, memos, books, or any type of correspondence on a computer.

What is a Word Processor?

A word processor is a software application (or application package) designed to facilitate text document creation, editing, and formatting. It’s the tool you use to perform word processing tasks. 

Examples of Word Processors:

Some of the popular word processors available today are: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect (WP), Google Docs, Open Office Writer, Word Pro, Corel WordPerfect, LibreOffice Writer, WordCraft, LocoScript, WordPad, etc. Although these word processors are created and sold by different companies, they possess many similar features and functions.

It is widely accepted that Microsoft Word is the most popular word processor. It is the standard in many businesses and is known for its broad range of features and functionality. 

MS Word is a member of the MS Office family. The MS Office package is an integrated package containing MS Office Word, MS Office Excel, MS Office Access, MS Office Powerpoint, MS Office Outlook, MS Office Frontpage, MS Office OneNote, etc.

Application Areas of Word Processing:

Word-processing is used in the following areas:

  • In offices
  • For publishing
  • In journalism
