What is Literature?

Literature means the body of oral or written works of a language. Written literature is a piece of writing that is valued as a work of art. Literature creates a way for people to record their thoughts and experiences in a way that is accessible to others. It expresses the writer’s personality, emotions, and beliefs. 

Purpose or Functions of Literature: 

(1) Literature affects the feelings and outlook of a person. 

(2) It may be used to expose and promote the culture of a people. 

(3) It introduces one to a new world of experiences. 

(4) Literature corrects certain wrongdoings in a society

(5) Literature is meant to teach, instruct, exert and educate. 

(6) It helps us, to understand life, and helps us to change our views about life. 

(7) Literature helps us to think deeply. 

(8) It helps in vocabulary development.
