What is an Adverb?

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. An adverb can also be described as a word which adds information to other words.

Some examples of adverbs are: gently, yesterday, proudly, later, well, briefly, daily.

Types of Adverbs:

The following are some examples of the common types of adverbs

1. Adverb of Frequency:

It includes regularly, always, occasionally, often, rarely, regularly, never etc. 

Amina visits us regularly.
Tunde often goes abroad for checkups.
I went to Togo many times before.
But I have never been to Ghana in my life.

2. Adverb of Degree:

It includes very, entirely, absolutely, slightly, totally etc.

The water is very hot.
This cake is absolutely delicious.
Aminat did very well in her exams.
I am not entirely satisfied with the drawing.

3. Adverb of Manner:

It includes hard, accurately, nicely, completely, etc.

She dressed nicely for the party.
Drive the car fast if you don’t want to miss your flight.
She works hard that’s why she is the best student.
He completely devotes all his time to football.
He always kicks the ball accurately.

4. Adverb of Place:

It includes there, here, etc.

I kept my book there.
Leave the car here.

5. Adverb of Time:

It includes before, after, later, now, then, tomorrow, today, day after tomorrow, everyday, yesterday etc.

The boy arrived in class later.
They played well in yesterday’s match.
She is going home tomorrow.
We played chess all day.
