What is a Diphthong?

A diphthong is a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable, in which the sound begins as one vowel and moves towards another.

Diphthongs are generally described in terms of their direction, or movement within the vowel space. Their articulation involves a glide from one vowel quality to the other.

Diphthong /eɪ/

This is the diphthong used in day, bait, and fail. There is no identifiable break between /e/ and /i/. In the production of the diphthong, the first part is usually articulated with great energy which gradually gets reduced with the glide towards the final part of the diphthong.

/eɪ/ – has different common spelling symbols which are listed below:

“a” – hale, gate, bale, sale, take, way, agent, change

“ai” – paid, tail, laid, maid, raid
