These sounds are called nasals because in their production there is a complete closure of the mouth as air passes through the nose. All nasal sounds are voiced.

/n/

The production of this sound involves the tip of the tongue forming a closure with the alveolar ridge (roof of the mouth). This allows air to pass over the soft palate and causes it to feel somewhat in the nose.

To produce the sound, put your tongue against the ridge just behind your top teeth so that your mouth is completely blocked and voice out through your nose.
