  • Challenges Faced by Adolescents

Adolescence is a critical period of development, filled with unique needs and challenges. Meeting these needs is essential to support healthy development and ensure a smooth transition into adulthood.

Below are some of the key needs and challenges faced by adolescents:

Needs of Adolescents:

1. Independence:

Adolescents need opportunities to make their own decisions, learn from their mistakes, and take responsibility for their actions. This should be done within a structured environment that provides guidance and clear boundaries.

2. Sense of Belonging:

Adolescents need to feel accepted and valued by their peers and family members. A strong family bond is needed for emotional security and guidance.

3. Emotional Support:

Adolescents need understanding from parents, teachers, and peers as they begin to discover themselves, navigate their emotional changes and explore their identity.

4. Physical and Mental Health Care:

To make the right choices, adolescents need access to the right information about sexual health, mental health, the disadvantages of peer pressure, nutrition, and substance abuse.

5. Academic and Career Guidance:

Adolescents need guidance in exploring their future career paths and support in learning academic subjects and developing life skills that will help them succeed in the future.

Challenges Faced by Adolescents:

1. Adjustment to Physical Changes:

Physical changes during puberty can lead to body image concerns, low self-esteem, and confidence issues. For girls, coping with enlarged breasts or the discomfort of menstruation and for boys, coping with a changed voice and hair growth can make them self-conscious of their bodies and uncomfortable in general.

2. Academic Pressure:

Parents of adolescents put a lot of pressure on them to excel academically which can lead to stress, social problems, burnout, and anxiety. The desire to be popular and the pressure to succeed academically can be challenging for many adolescents.

3. Family Conflicts:

Failing to meet the expectations of parents whether in academics, friend choices, behaviour, or career choices can lead to conflict in the home. As adolescents seek more independence it can lead to a strain in relationships with parents or guardians.

4. Risk-Taking Behaviors:

Whether due to peer pressure or the desire to seek new experiences and independence, adolescents may engage in risky behaviours such as substance use, unsafe sexual activity, or reckless driving. Adolescents are prone to risk-taking behaviours.

5. Bullying:

Almost all adolescents may face some type of bullying in school which could lead to anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem.

6. Peer Pressure:

Their peers can have a negative influence on them which can lead to risky behaviour, such as drug abuse, unhealthy relationships, and a rebellious attitude towards rules, at home and school.

7. Sexual Relationships:

Adolescents get easily attracted to their peers because of their hormonal changes, and they also get heartbroken easily because adolescents are usually not mature enough for romantic relationships. The heartbreak adolescents experience makes romantic relationships a risk to their mental and emotional well-being which can also lead to depression and lack of motivation.
