What is Menstruation?
Menstruation is the monthly shedding of the lining of the uterus, through the vagina.
It is also defined as the monthly flow of blood from the womb, through the vagina which occurs in every woman of childbearing age.
Menstrual Cycle:
A menstrual cycle begins with the first day of the period, or menstruation and starts over again when the next period begins. It differs from one person to another, for some it takes place every 25 – 30 days, and for others every 21 – 35 days. Women can expect to bleed between three and seven days each time they get their period.
Menstrual Hygiene:
The following hygiene practices are very important during menstruation:
1. Use good absorbent sanitary pads, tampons, towels or period pants. These will prevent the clothes from blood stains.
2. Take your bath regularly and change pads as often as three times a day to prevent bad odour.
3. Wrap the soiled pad in an old newspaper before throwing it in a refuse bin.
4. Go about your normal activities during this period and observe your menstrual hygiene.
