To round a decimal number to the nearest whole number, look at the figure in the 1st d.p, if its is 5 or more round the whole number up, if it is less than 5, do not change the whole number.

Example

Round off:

i. 19.73
ii. 54.255 to the nearest whole number

Solution

i.

Screen Shot 2020 11 26 at 7.25.16 PM

1st d.p  is more than 5 so add 1 to the whole number

i.e.  19  +  1    =   20

19.73  =  20 to the nearest whole number.

ii.

Screen Shot 2020 11 26 at 7.27.07 PM

1st d.p is less than 5 so add nothing to the whole number

54 .255 = 54 to the nearest whole number.
