Worked Example 12.1.1: 

374 . 3547 correct to the nearest:

a) tenth
b) hundredth
c) thousandth.

Solution

The place value of each figure is shown below:

a. To round a decimal number to the nearest tenth (t) or 0.1 is the same as rounding to 1 d.p

  = 374.4 to the nearest 0.1

b. To round a decimal number to the nearest hundredth (h)  or 0.01 is the same as rounding to 2 d.p.

  = 374.35 to the nearest 0.01

c. To round a decimal number to the nearest thousandth (th) or 0.001 is the same as rounding to 3 d.p.

  = 374.355 to the nearest 0.001.
