Topic Content:

  • Conversion of Fraction to Percentage

Remember that 23% means \(\frac{23}{100} \). Thus 23% is the same as 0.23.

To convert a fraction to a percent, first divide the numerator by the denominator. Then multiply the decimal by 100.

e.g. the fraction \(\frac{4}{5} \) = 0.8

0.8 × 100 = 80

Therefore, the fraction \(\frac{4}{5} \) is equivalent to 80%

Worked Example 7.61:

Write \(\frac{2}{25} \) as a percent

Solution

\(\frac{2}{25} \) =  2 ÷ 25 = 0.08

= 0.08 × 100 = 8

Therefore, the fraction \(\frac{2}{25} \) is equivalent to 8%

Worked Example 7.62:

Write \(\frac{7}{4} \)as a percent

Solution

\(\frac{7}{4} \) = 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75

1.75 × 100 = 175%

Therefore, the fraction 7/4 is equivalent to 175%
