Topic Content:

  • Conversion of Percentage to Fraction

To change from a percentage to a fraction, put the percentage over 100 (after removing the % sign) and simplify if necessary.

Worked Example 7.7.1:

Express each of the following percentages into a fraction in its lowest terms:

i. 17% = \( \frac{17}{100} \)

ii. 45% =   \( \frac{45}{100} \\ = \frac{9}{20} \)

iii. 10%  =    \( \frac{10}{100}\\ = \frac{1}{10} \)

iv. 115% =    \( \frac{115}{100}\\ = \frac{23}{20} \)

v. 1%  =    \( \frac{1}{100} \)

vi. 3.5%  =    \( \frac{35}{10} \scriptsize \% \\ = \normalsize \frac{35}{10} \: \times \: \frac{1}{100} \\ = \frac{35}{1000} \\\ \scriptsize divide\: through \: by\: 5 \\ = \frac{7}{200} \)
