We use the words million, billion, and trillion for large numbers. They are connected as follows:

1 million = 1 thousand × 1000
1 billion = 1 million × 1000
1 trillion = 1 billion × 1000

Worked Example 1.2.1

Write 2 468 900 in words.

Solution 

2 000 000 = Two million 
468 000 = Four hundred and sixty-eight thousand
900 = Nine hundred

Answer: 2 468 900 = Two million, four hundred and sixty-eight thousand, nine hundred.

Worked Example 1.2.2

Write the number 3 184 200 940 in words. 

Solution 

3 000 000 000 = Three billion 
184 000 000 = One hundred and eighty-four million 
200 000 = Two hundred thousand 
900 = Nine hundred 
40 = Forty

Answer: 3 184 200 940 – Three billion, one hundred and eighty-four million, two hundred thousand, nine hundred and forty. 

Worked Example 1.2.3

Write eleven trillion eight hundred and one billion, three million, five thousand, and ninety-eight in figures. 

Solution 

Eleven trillion = 11  000  000  000  000
Eight hundred and one billion = 801  000  000  000
Three million = 3  000  000
Five thousand and ninety-eight = 5 098

Answer: Eleven trillion eight hundred and one billion, three million, five thousand, and ninety-eight in figures = 11,801,003,005,090
