Perimeter of square  =   4L, Where L =  side of a square.

PERIMETER OF A SQUARE

Perimeter  =   L  +   L    +   L   +   L     =   4L

Example 1:

Calculate the Perimeter of a square whose length is 20cm.

Solution:

A square has all four sides equal so each length is 20cm.

square

Perimeter of Square   = 4L

L = 20cm

4L = 4   x  L

= 4   x   20

= 80cm.

Example 2:

The perimeter of a square is 44cm, Find the length of the square.

Solution

Perimiter, P   =   4L

The perimeter of the square is 44cm, P =  44cm

∴ 44 = 4L

Divide both sides by 4

\( \frac{44}{4} = \frac{4L}{4} \)

Move the unknown, L, to the left-hand side

\( \frac{4L}{4} = \frac{44}{4} \)

\( \frac{\not{4}L}{\not{4}} = \frac{44}{4} \)

L   =   11cm

The length of the square   =  11cm
