Brief History of Volleyball

Volleyball was invented by William George Morgan in America in 1895. It was called Mintonette, which was derived from badminton.

Volleyball was recognized as an Olympic sport on September 24, 1957.

Volleyball became an Olympic game in 1964 and was first played at the Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan.

The first volleyball world championship was held in 1949 for men and 1952 for women.

Volleyball was added as a medal sport for men and women in 1961.

Beech volleyball was played for the first time at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

The world body that controls volleyball is known as Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) formed in 1947.

The body in charge of volleyball in Nigeria is the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVF) founded in 1970 with Dr Omoruan as its first chairman.
