Contact sports have several examples, to demonstrate the skills and techniques in contact sports, we will start with judo.

Judo Basic Skills:

1.  Stance: the judoka takes a stiff, erect body posture with the knees slightly bent.

Note: Judoka is the name given to a judo participant.

2.  Grip: the Judoka uses his right hand to hold his opponent’s left sleeves and the opponent’s right lap with his left hand. For the Judoka to throw his opponent, the grip has to be firm.

3. Movement: the Judoka tries to imbalance his opponent by pulling or pushing the opponent’s trunk as fast as possible, moving with his feet with short and smooth steps.

 4. Throw: there are different ways of throwing an opponent in judo.

  • Types of Throw:
    • Pulling the body down throw (known as Taiotoshi)
    • Over-the-shoulder throw (Ippon seoinage)
    • Reaping throw (Osoto gari)
    • Hip throw (O-Goshi)
    • Position and throw (Tsukuri Kake)

5. Break Falling (Ukemi) is a way to protect oneself when taking a fall from a throw of an opponent.

Under break falling, we have;

i. backward roll break fall

ii. forward roll break fall.
