  • Definition of Contact Sports

What are Contact Sports?

Contact sports are sports that require direct physical body closeness or contact between the players.

There are some sports that emphasize physical body contact between players. Sports like mixed martial arts are scored onon how much damage a fighter inflicts on their opponent, while some other sports require tackling of players e.g. rugby football, gridiron football, and Australian rules football.

These sports can not be undertaken without contact, and as such are known as full-contact sports.

Some sports may have contact but are illegal under the rules of the game i.e contact is not accommodated in the game or contact does not form part of the game.
