We have already defined primary social group in the first lesson.

Below are reasons that make the family a primary social group;

1. It has a small size – i.e. the members are few, which makes the members familiar with one another. This is especially true for a nuclear family.

2. It is the main unit of socialization for children. A child learns the attitudes, values and actions appropriate to individuals at home through the family.

3. Members share strong bonds, attachments and intimate relationships.

4. The members depend on one another.

5. Throughout the course of their lives, members maintain continuous and permanent membership.

6. Family usually stays united regardless of any threat or external factors.
