- Uses/Importance of Crude Oil
1. Petrol or gasoline: used to run engines such as cars and generators.
2. Petroleum gas: used for cooking and for generating electricity. Examples of petroleum gas include methane, butane and ethane.
3. Naphtha (Petrochemical feedstock): a clear colourless, flammable mixture of high hydrocarbons. It is one of the raw materials for many petrochemicals and plastics.
4. Lubricating oil: used as grease for oiling movable joints or machines.
5. Bitumen: a sticky mixture of hydrocarbons found in substances such as asphalt and tar. It is used for road surfacing.
6. Diesel: Diesel oil is used for running engines, and to heat furnaces in industries.
7. Kerosene (paraffin oil): it is used for jet engines, heating, cooking and lighting.
8. Petroleum jelly: it is used as an ointment base, lubricant, and protective covering.
9. Fuel oil: is used for powering marine engines, powering generators, and industrial and commercial equipment such as boilers and furnaces.
