What is Conduction?

The mode of heat transfer by which heat is passed along material from molecule to molecule, with the heated particle remaining in position, is called conduction.

For example, if one end X of a rod of iron is held close to a burning flame and the other end Y is held in the hand, the hand end Y soon feels warm.
