What is Convection?

The transfer of heat, by the movement of heated material, is called convection. Convection occurs in liquids and gasses.

During convection, the heated part of the substance expands, becomes lighter and rises, cooler molecules move nearer to the source of heat taking the place of the expanding ones, in turn, they are heated, expand and move higher.
