- Divide a line in a Given Proportion or Ratio
- Video Illustration
a. Divide a Line into a Given Number of Equal Parts (10 equal divisions):
Steps taken are;
i. Draw the given line AB = 100 mm
ii. Draw AC at any convenient angle, and set off from point A, ten equal divisions of the line using a divider or pencil and ruler
iii. Join point 10 to point B, and through the other points, draw lines parallel to 10B by sliding the set-square on any straight edge such as a tee-square shown below. AB is now divided into the required number of equal parts, i.e. 10.
b. Divide a Line in a Given Proportion or Ratio:
For example, divide a line of length 10 cm in the ratio of 3:2:2
Steps taken to divide a line in the required proportion;
i. Draw line AB = 10 cm / 100 mm.
ii. Draw line AC at any convenient angle.
iii. Locate 7 points (3 + 2 + 2) such that each point is equal to the other. So you need to divide the line into 7 equal parts.
iv. Join line B to point 7. Join lines parallel to 7B at points 5 (3 + 2) and 3 (0 + 3)
The parallel lines divide line AB into the required ratio or proportion, i.e. 3:2:2
