There are two basic classes of woodworking machines in use. They are:

  • Portable Power Hand Tool Machines
  • Machines

1. Portable Power Hand Tool Machines:

Portable power hand tools are power-driven light tools that can be easily moved to different locations. They are portable and handy.

Portable power hand tool machines include the following:

(a) Hand Drill:

This is an electrically powered tool used for boring holes in wood. It contains the chuck which turns the drill bit clockwise and anti-clockwise.

(b) Sander:

This is a power tool used to smoothen the surface of wood by abrasion with sandpaper. The power is attached to a rotating mechanism within the housing. It can be powered electrically or by compressed air.

The following are the types of sanding machines:

  • Belt sander.
  • Flap sander.
  • Disc sander, etc.
Sander

i. Belt Sander: This machine is used for shaping and finishing wood. The machine is made up of an electric motor that turns a pair of drums on which a seamless loop of sandpaper is mounted as shown in the figure below

ii. Flap Sander: This sander is ideal for use in an electric drill for curved surfaces and detailed work.
