What is a Gear?

A gear is a rotating machine part having teeth which mesh with one another, and transmits motion between rotating shafts as shown in the animation below:

Gear mesh is what happens when the gears are close enough that the teeth overlap or interlock and moving one gear forces the other to move. The definition of mesh is to join together in the correct position.
