Metalworking Lathe Machine
Topic Content:
- Definition of Lathe Machine
- Uses of a Lathe Machine
- Components of a Lathe Machine

What is a Lathe Machine?
A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform various metalwork operations.

Lathes can be used to produce parts that are ferrous, non-ferrous metals, plastics, and wood. This machine removes metals by the use of a rigidly controlled hard steel cutting tool.

Metalworking lathes function by rotating the metal workpiece, and the cutting tool then slowly subtracting material from the workpiece’s outer surface. The purpose of this operation is to reduce the size of the workpiece to the required dimensions.
Uses of a Lathe Machine:
A lathe machine or centre lathe is an all-purpose machine, used for the following operations:
- generating cylindrical, flat, and conical surfaces
- cutting holes in geometrical shapes
- cutting threads on screws, bolts, and nuts
- reducing the size of geometrical shapes
- milling, turning, shaping, and planing.
Components of a Lathe Machine:
