The Death of Jesus on the Cross (Matthew 27:45-56)

About the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour (12:00 noon – 3p.m) The sun was darkened and the veil of the temple was torn into two.

At the ninth hour (3p.m) Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, Lamasabaeththani” Meaning, “My God, My God, why have thou forsaken me” Father I commit my spirit into thy hands. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He breathed his last breath and died.

At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. Matt. 27: 51 – 53

The centurion who saw all that happened glorified God saying “certainly, this man was a righteous man”.

Among the woman, watching from a distance, that had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
