The Triumphant Entry (Matt 21:1-11, Mk 11:1-11, Lk 19:28-44)
Immediately after Jesus was through with his ministry in Galilee, he decided to move to Jerusalem. The purpose was to carry the Gospel message to the religious capital of the Jews.
On arrival at Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples to Bethany to fetch a donkey and her colt, that had not been ridden by anyone.
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ” (Matthew 21:3)
This event took place to fulfil the prophecy of Zechariah;
“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
The disciples did as Jesus instructed, brought the donkey and her colt and placed a cloak on them for Jesus to sit on.
A very large crowd followed him and some of the people there threw their clothes on the road and some spread leafy branches or palm font, while some went ahead.
The crowd that followed were singing and shouting “Hosanna! Hosanna” Hosanna” Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come, Hosanna in the highest.
However, Jesus rode on the colt of an ass into Jerusalem in fulfilment of the prophecy of Zechariah. (Zechariah 9:9).
