Types and Definition of Parts of Speech:

It is important that students master the various parts of speech, in order to understand fully the ideas being communicated by a large number of them, as they combine to form a sentence. Each part plays a role to make the expression more meaningful. Some of them include:

1. Adjective:

An adjective is a word that qualifies a noun or pronoun.

For example:

  • The man is handsome
  • The poor man.

2. Verb:

A verb is an action word. It tells us about the state or action.

For example:

  • Tade slaps Chike.
  • Femi kicked a ball.

3. Nouns:

Nouns are naming words.

For example:

  • Lagos is my city.
  • Shade is her name.

4. Adverbs:

An adverb is a word that adds meaning or modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

For example:

  • She sings well.
  • Bakare dresses nicely.
  • He walked home slowly.

5. Pronoun:

A pronoun is used instead of a noun to avoid unnecessary repetition.

For example:

  • Ade came here: He came here.
  • Alice sang a song: She sang a song.

6. Preposition:

A preposition is a word that is often placed before a noun or a pronoun, to indicate direction, or location.

For example:

  • They sat on the floor.
  • Dayo hides behind the wall.

7. Interjection:

An interjection is a word which is often used to show surprise or joy.

For example:

  • Oh! I have found my pencil.
  • Hurray!

8. Conjunction:

A conjunction is a word which is used to join two words or sentences together.

For example:

  • This is good for you and me.
  • He and I love our mathematics teacher.
