  • Consonant Sounds /dʒ/, /tʃ/, /j/, /h/

An overview of the sounds, /dʒ/, /tʃ/, /j/, /h/, with different examples.

/dʒ/

The blade and the rims of the tongue form a complete obstruction to the airstream with the alveolar ridge, while the front part of the tongue is raised towards the hard palate. There is a vibration in the production of this sound. It has many different spelling symbols

Examples are:

“j”

joy, jam, joke, jerry.

“g”

gin, germ, giant

“dge”, “ge”

large, badge, judge

/tʃ/

The production of this sound involves a total obstruction of the air. The blade and the sides of the tongue help in the total obstruction to the airstream, with the alveolar ridge while the front of the tongue is raised. The sound /tʃ/ has many different symbols.

Examples are:

“ch”

chief, march, cheese.
