What is a Suffix?

A suffix is a word that is placed after a root word to form another word. E.g. –ness, -ment, -ship, -er, -ation, -less.

Use of Suffixes to form Adverbs, Nouns and Adjectives:

Adjective + tly

e.g;

  • Unwillingly, stealthily, continuously.

Adverb+ ward 

e.g.

  • forward.

Noun + ward

e.g.

  • homeward.

Noun + wise

e.g.

  • anticlockwise.

Noun + logy

e.g.

  • phonology, technology.

Evaluation:

With the use of a suffix, form a new word from each of the following words.

Mouth, use, teach, break, drive, child, suit, fame.
