Finding the Percentage of a Quantity

To find the percentage of a quantity, multiply the quantity by the percentage.

Worked Example 9.5.1:

Find the following

a. 20%  of  $2600
b. 30% of ₦900
c. 70% of 500 students

Solution

a. 20% of $2600  = \( \frac{20}{100} \scriptsize \: \times \: $2600 \\ =\frac{20}{1\not{0}\not{0}} \scriptsize \: \times \: $26 \not{\!0}\not{\!0} \\= \scriptsize 20 \: \times \: $26 \\ = \scriptsize $520 \)

b. 30% of ₦900  = \( \frac{30}{100} \scriptsize \: \times \: ₦900 \\ =\frac{30}{1\not{0}\not{0}} \scriptsize \: \times \: ₦9 \not{\!0}\not{\!0} \\= \scriptsize 30 \: \times \: ₦9 \\ = \scriptsize ₦270 \) 

c. 70% of 500 students   =    \( \frac{70}{100} \scriptsize \: \times \: 500 \\ =\frac{70}{1\not{0}\not{0}} \scriptsize \: \times \: 5 \not{\!0}\not{\!0} \\ = \scriptsize 70 \: \times \: 5 \\ = \scriptsize 350 \: students \)
