To round off a number or quantity to the nearest whole number or to the nearest of that quantity, compare the last digit before the decimal point and the first digit after the decimal point.

Example 1

Round off the following to the nearest whole number.

a. 6.2009

b. 524.89

c. 0.952

Solution

a. 6.2009

= 6 to the nearest whole number

b. 524.89

Example 2

Round off each of the following; 

a. 42.90cm  to the nearest cm = 43cm

b. 7.3m to the nearest m = 7m

c. 3975km to the nearest 10km = 3975km = 3980km

d. 6506g to the nearest 100g = 6506g = 6500g
