Round Off Whole Numbers & Quantities

To round off a number or quantity to the nearest whole number or to the nearest of that quantity, compare the last digit before the decimal point and the first digit after the decimal point.

Worked Example 8.3.1:

Round off the following to the nearest whole number:

a. 6.2009
b. 524.89
c. 0.952

Solution

a. 6.2009

= 6 to the nearest whole number

b. 524.89

= 525 to the nearest whole number

c. 0.952

= 1 to the nearest whole number

Worked Example 8.3.2:

Round off each of the following;

a. 42.90 cm to the nearest cm = 43 cm

b. 7.3 m to the nearest m = 7 m

c. 3975 km to the nearest 10 km = 3975 km = 3980 km

d. 6506 g to the nearest 100 g = 6506 g = 6500 g
