1. Positive power of 10:
To multiply a decimal number by the positive power of 10, move the decimal point by the number of times the power appears to the right e.g.
Worked Example 6.2.1:
Calculate the value of:
a. 2.3 × 106
b. 5.3467 × 102
c. 5.3467 × 101
d. 5.3467 × 103
Solution
a. 2.3 × 106

= 2,300,000
b. 5.3467 × 102

= 534.67
c. 5.3467 × 101

= 53.467
d. 5.3467 × 103

= 5346.7
2. Negative power of 10:
To multiply a decimal number by a negative power of 10, move the decimal point by the number of times the power appears to the left.
Worked Example 6.2.2:
Evaluate the following:
a. 2.3 × 10-6
b. 5.3467 × 10-1
c. 5.3467 × 10-2
d. 5.3467 × 10-3
Solution
a. 2.3 × 10-6

= 0.0000023
b. 5.3467 × 10-1

= 0.53467
c. 5.3467 × 10-2

= 0.053467
d. 5.3467 × 10-3

= 0. 0053467
