Highest Common Factor (HCF)

Recall: The highest common factor (HCF) of two or more numbers is the greatest of the factors common to them.

Example 3.3.1: 

Find the Highest Common Factors (HCF) of:

(a) 3a²by and 2a² b² y²
(b) 4ab and 6b²c 

Solution

(a) 3a²by and 2a² b² y²

 HCF = a × a × b × y

= a²by

(b) 4ab and 6b²c 

HCF = 2 × b 

= 2b
