Types of Quadrilaterals
Topic Content:
- Types of Quadrilaterals
Parallelogram:
A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with opposite sides equal and parallel.
Properties:
1. Both pairs of opposite sides parallel.
2. Opposite sides are equal in length.
3. Diagonals bisect each other.
4. No line of symmetry.
5. Has rotational symmetryThe rotational symmetry of a shape explains that when an object is rotated on its own axis, the shape of the object looks like the original shape. Many geometrical shapes appear... More of order 2.
Rectangle:
Properties:
1. All angles are equal and are 90ยบ.
2. Opposite sides are parallel.
3. Opposite sides are equal in length.
4. Has equal diagonals that bisect each other.
5. Has 2 lines of symmetryA line of symmetry is the line that divides a shape or an object into two equal and symmetrical parts. More.
6. Has rotational symmetry of order 2.
Square:
A square is a quadrilateral with all sides equal and at right angle to each other.
Properties
1. Each interior angle equals 90ยบ.
2. All sides equal in length.
3. Opposite sides are parallel.
4. Equal diagonals that bisect each other.
5. Diagonals that bisect at right angles.
6. 4 lines of symmetry.
7. Rotational symmetry of order 4.
Rhombus:
A rhombus is a parallelogram which has all four sides equal.
Properties
1. All sides are equal in length.
2. Opposite sides parallel.
3. Diagonals bisect each corner angle.
4. Diagonals intersect at right angles.
5. Has two lines of symmetry.
6. Has rotational symmetry of order 2.
Kite:
Properties
1. Adjacent pairs of sides are equal in length.
2. One pair of opposite angles equal in size.
3. Diagonals intersect at right angles.
4. One diagonal bisects the other diagonal.
5. Only one pair of opposite angles are bisectedBisect means dividing into two equal parts. It means to divide a geometric figure such as a line, an angle or any other shape into two congruent parts (or two parts... More.
6. 1 axis of symmetry.
7. Rotational symmetry of order 1.
By order 1, we mean there is no rotational order of symmetry.
Trapezium:
A trapezium is a quadrilateral that has one pair of opposite sides parallel.
A trapezium may be non-isosceles or isosceles.
Types of Trapezium
- Non-isosceles trapezium
- Isosceles trapezium
Properties of Non-Isosceles Trapezium
1. One pair of opposite sides parallel
2. No axis of symmetry and no rotational symmetry
Properties of an Isosceles Trapezium
1. One pair of opposite sides are parallel.
2. Non-parallel sides are equal in length.
3. Two pairs of equal angles.
4. One axis of symmetry and no rotational symmetry.
