A workplace accident is an unplanned occurrence or event that causes physical harm to workers on the job.
Causes of Workplace Accidents:
1. Distractions: When workers are distracted, they can trip over clutter or walk into things, especially when using their phones.
2. Untidy work environment: An unkept environment poses a number of hazards that cause accidents.
- Note: A well-maintained workplace promotes a healthier working environment.
3. Cutting Corners: This entails taking shortcuts in order to do work faster, which could result in a host of hazards that cause accidents. Cutting corners in a manner that reduces safety will increase the risk of injury.
4. Tiredness: When activities are performed over a long period of time without regular breaks could lead to injury.
5. Loose electrical cords and wires.
6. Negligent and Careless workers fail to use proper equipment when working, they rather go for items which would endanger their lives.
7. Wet floors or slippery surfaces can trip a worker when walking around the workplace. Some of the easiest workplace accidents to be avoided are slips, trips and falls.
Prevention of Workplace Accidents:
1. Adequate training of workers.
2. Regular inspection of the site.
3. Employees should be supervised.
4. A risk management approach to operation should be adopted; which helps one to understand where there is danger and make an effort to eliminate it.
5. Discourage risky behaviour.
