- The Differences Between Goals & Objectives
The concepts “Goals” and “Objectives” are related and yet, different. Some management academics would say that the difference between goals and objectives is that a goal is a description of a destination while an objective is a measure of the progress that is needed to get to the destination.
The table below shows some differences between goals and objectives:
Goals Vs Objectives:
Goals | Objectives | |
1. | Broad in Scope | Narrow in Scope |
2. | General intention or direction | Specific or precise in nature |
3. | The end | The means to an end |
4. | Long-term | Short-term |
5. | Abstract | Solid or concrete |
6. | Cannot be easily measured or validated | Can be easily measured or validated |
Example of a Goal:
- My goal is to learn to play the piano and guitar.
Example of an Objective:
- To play the piano and guitar, it’s my objective to practice three times a week for a year.
